Clinical Overview

Clinical Summary: Bilirubin is a yellowish pigment made during the normal breakdown of red blood cells. It passes through the liver and is eventually excreted. High levels cause Jaundice.

What is the Bilirubin Test?

This test measures both 'Total' and 'Direct' (conjugated) bilirubin. This distinction helps doctors determine if a problem is occurring before, inside, or after the liver (such as a bile duct blockage).

Why get tested?

  • To investigate yellowing of the skin and eyes (Jaundice).
  • To screen for bile duct obstructions or gallstones.
  • To evaluate newborn jaundice levels.

Clinical Interpretation Range

Test Type Normal Range (mg/dL)
Total Bilirubin 0.1 - 1.2 mg/dL
Direct Bilirubin Less than 0.3 mg/dL

Preparation

Fasting for 4-8 hours may be required. Certain medications can interfere with results, so consult your doctor before the test.
